Guidelines for Preventing the Transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Health-Care Settings, 2005

This report discusses the guidelines set forth by the United States (US) Department of Health and Human Services to prevent and control the spread of tuberculosis (TB) in various types of health care facilities. The report examines the epidemiology of TB in the US, as well as the pathogenesis of TB infection to active TB. It explains the risks for the nosocomial transmission of TB, and the fundamentals of TB infection control in health-care facilities. It provides guidelines about how to perform a TB risk assessment for the health-care facility and about how to develop a good infection control plan. It summarizes how to identify, evaluate, and initiate treatment for patients suspected of having active TB. The report states how to care and manage patients with TB in different types of health-care facilities. The report tells the reader about the engineering controls necessary to keep TB from spreading in health-care facilities and training for health care workers (HCW). The report reviews how to diagnose and treat patients with TB infection and active TB, including preventive therapy for latent TB infection. The report provides guidelines for engineering controls and respiratory protections in health care facilities.

TB/HIV Research Priorities in Resource-Limited Settings: Report of an Expert Consultation

This report is an outline of the Expert Consultation on TB/HIV Research Priorities in Resource-limited Setting on 14-16 February 2005 in Geneva, Switzerland. Three discussion groups identified research priorities for five major areas: (1) preventive therapy for TB were identified with a distinction between the population and the individual levels; (2) co-trimoxazole prophylaxis including the role of co-trimoxazole in the context of antiretroviral therapy, delivery strategies, and determining the efficacy of and optimal time for initiating co-trimoxazole prophylaxis among people living with HIV/AIDS and TB; (3) antiretroviral therapy for people living with HIV/AIDS who have TB or who develop TB is validating the optimal time for initiating antiretroviral therapy; (4) intensified case-finding focus on ways to put this TB/HIV collaborative activity into operation to improve TB control; and (5) the development of new tools and diagnostic algorithms to improve the diagnosis of smear-negative TB in adults and children.

Priority Research Questions for TB/HIV in HIV-Prevalent and Resource-Limited Settings

This document is intended to raise awareness about TB/HIV research priorities (i.e. areas that require urgent funding and scientific interest), help coordinate advocacy efforts, and encourage research funding. The aim is to increase the implementation of high-quality, integrated TB/HIV interventions in resource-limited settings. The document outlines a revised research priority agenda based on the latest evidence in six key areas of TB and HIV co-infection.
