This report presents summary data for TB cases verified and counted in 2012. The data were submitted to CDC’s Division of TB Elimination by 60 reporting areas, 50 states, the District of Columbia, New York City, Puerto Rico, and seven other jurisdictions in the Pacific and Caribbean. The report contains an Executive Commentary, which provides highlights of the 2012 data, Technical Notes including information about how the data were collected and reported, seven major data sections, and appendices. MMWR: Trends in Tuberculosis – United States, 2012

This report summarizes provisional TB surveillance data reported to CDC’s National Tuberculosis Surveillance System in 2012. A total of 9,951 new TB cases were reported for an incidence of 3.2 cases per 100,000 population, which is a decrease of 6.1 percent from the incidence in 2011. TB incidence rate among foreign-born persons in the United States was 11.5 times as high as in US-born persons. Also, racial/ethnic disparities in TB incidence persist with TB rates among non-Hispanic Asians, Hispanics, and non-Hispanic blacks were 25.0, 6.6, and 7.3 times as high respectively. The number of TB cases dropped below 10,000 for the first time since standardized national reporting began in 1953, but there are challenges that slow progress toward the goal of TB elimination in the United States.

This is the seventeenth global report on tuberculosis (TB) published by WHO in a series that started in 1997. It provides a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the TB epidemic and progress in implementing and financing TB prevention, care and control at global, regional and country levels using data reported by 204 countries and territories that account for over 99% of the world’s TB cases.

Reported Tuberculosis in the United States, 2007

This report presents summary data for TB cases reported to the Division of TB Elimination (DTBE), verified, and counted in 2007. These reports of TB cases were submitted by 60 reporting areas (50 states, the District of Columbia, New York City, Puerto Rico, and seven other jurisdictions in the Pacific and Caribbean). The publication contains six sections: (1) trends in the overall TB case counts and case rates by selected demographic and clinical characteristics; (2) overall case counts and case rates for the US by selected demographic characteristics for 2007; (3) TB case counts and case rates by state and other jurisdictions with tables of selected demographic and clinical characteristics; (4) data collected as part of the expanded system (initial drug resistance, HIV status, etc.) by reporting area; (5) TB case counts and case rates by metropolitan statistical areas with tables of selected demographic and clinical characteristics; and (6) figures from the annual surveillance slide set, which emphasize key recent trends in TB epidemiology in the US. Current case definition for public health surveillance and recommendations for counting reported TB cases are appended.
