Addressing Social Determinants of Health: Accelerating the Prevention and Control of HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB External Consultation December 9-10, 2008: Atlanta, Georgia, Meeting Report

This report summarizes the external consultation on appropriate key short - and long-term priorities for addressing social determinants of HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB) for the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) to undertake. Leading academic, scientific, public health, and community stakeholders discussed the development of more effective ways to address social determinants of these diseases in four key public health activity areas: public health policy, data systems, agency partnerships and capacity building, and prevention research and evaluation. The strategic priorities and focus areas of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Coordinating Center for Infectious Diseases (CCID), and the NCHHSTP and their respective roles in the effort are presented, as well as a comprehensive overview of the three models considered for NCHHSTP’s prevention programs and activities. Also, case studies of ongoing projects in the four diseases are presented. The appendices include the agenda and list of participants.
