Country Specific Guides for Healthcare Professionals Working with Foreign-Born TB Clients

The Southeastern National Tuberculosis Center in collaboration with the Lung Health Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham developed a TB-specific cultural competency guide. The guide is comprised of an introduction and individual country-specific summaries for the birth countries most commonly reported by foreign-born cases treated in the United States. Each country summary contains the following information: country background; tuberculosis (TB) and HIV epidemiology; common misperceptions, beliefs, attitudes, and stigmatizing practices related to TB and HIV/AIDS; cultural courtesies to observe when interacting with patients and families; website links to translated patient education materials; and references. The Guides will help TB professionals employ a more culturally relativistic approach when working with foreign-born individuals. The introduction provides an overview of the country summaries. Country summaries are available for Brazil, Cambodia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Philippines, Somalia, Vietnam.
