Treatment of Drug-Susceptible Tuberculosis Disease in Persons Not Infected with HIV

This information sheet discusses the treatment of TB disease in individuals who are not infected with HIV and who are not resistant to any of the drugs used to treat TB disease. It follows the guidelines released in 2003 by the American Thoracic Society, CDC, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. It describes the recommended regimens for treating TB using the first line anti-TB drugs isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide, and explains the initial and continuation phases of treatment. The information sheet also describes the required case management process including directly observed therapy (DOT) to ensure patient adherence and follow-up evaluations to determine if the continuation phase should be extended and to identify possible adverse effects.
